05 April 2011:LEYDEN SPARKS CLAMPING LEGISLATION:
Seanad contribution raises priority of 'immoral' clamping
Senator Terry Leyden has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Transport, Mr. Leo Varadkar,
that legislation regulating private clamping companies is soon to be introduced. Senator Leyden
raised the issue in the Seanad, Wednesday last week, 23rd March.
"He responded speedily to the case I made in the Seanad, to control the activities of these
clamping companies. There is no legislative authority for the activities of these companies,
which are making life hell for law abiding citizens.
"I am calling this legislation to be introduced as matter of urgency; before the peak tourist
season to avoid the stress and damage to the tourist industry as well as our our citizens.
"Even last night, I attended a meeting of Dublin City Council and witnessed that a row of four cars were chained. Cars impounded without any
legislative basis"

Senator Terry Leyden's Seanad Statment on the Issue of Clamping: 23 March
2011:
"I want the Minister to look into clampers operating in the country. In the
previous Dáil, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Deputy
Simon Coveney, issued a Private Members’ Bill, the Vehicle Immobilisation
Regulation Bill 2010. I am asking the Government to include a very good
piece of legislation put forward by Deputy Simon Coveney who is now a
Minister. I met a young man in Galway whose car had been clamped. He had
run out of petrol on Main Street, pushed his car into a little car park and
was clamped—— If I am re-elected to this House I intend to reintroduce and
reactive this Private Members’ Bill and will ask the Minister to support me
in this regard. I want to use this House to expose what amounts to
gangsterism."
